Swimming Lessons

When can my child start group swimming lessons at Aspire?

We take children from 4 years of age. It is the age when most children are confident and independent enough to be given instructions by a coach without needing a parent present in the water for support. We find this is the fastest way to develop independent swimming at a young age.

What are your swimming levels/ability level guidelines?

We offer classes for all abilities, simply follow our ability level guidelines to select the most suitable class for your child when signing up to our waiting list. It may be necessary for your child to attend a free swimming assessment before enrolling onto a course.

How many children are in each class?

Non-Swimmer classes have a maximum of 6 children per instructor. Beginner and Improver 1 classes have a maximum of 7 children per instructor. Improver 2, Advanced 1 & 2 classes have 8 children per instructor.

Why is it important for them to learn to swim?

Unlike other sports, swimming is a vital life skill. Not only will it develop fitness but it could save your child’s life. We don’t just teach the children to swim, we teach them to be the best swimmers they can possibly.

How qualified are the swimming instructors?

All our swimming teachers have a minimum Level 2 Teaching Swimming Qualification (ASA or equivalent). Furthermore, all our instructors carry out practical competency assessment before they start the work at our centre to ensure they meet our teaching criteria. We are proud to say that few of our teachers have over 20 years of teaching experience.

How do I re-enrol for the next term?

Nearer the end of the term, we email all the parents with all the re-enrolment dates and inform them that they can contact us to find out about their child’s level via phone or email.

Shortly after, another email is sent out with the rebooking link which you can choose to follow in order to rebook.

The process of re-booking is not automatic as you are expected to commit to only one termly payment and if you do not want to continue with us, you simply do not rebook for the next term.

How quickly will my children learn to swim?

This is a very tricky question to answer but one we get asked a lot. Each child will progress at their own rate so some are noticeably quicker than others at taking to the water.

What we can promise is that your child will progress noticeably quicker with us than they would with their school as the structure of our lessons ensures children are taught in small sized groups that enable teachers to effectively instruct yet maintain social aspect of lessons that motivates and challenges children in the group.

Do you still award swimming badges to children? Why?

We give every single student in our group swimming lessons an opportunity to achieve badge and a certificate which follows the national Swim England curriculum. We do this at the end of each term to reward the children for all of their hard work.

The purchase of both, badge and certificate is optional and it costs only £3 (available to purchase at reception).

My child's scared of the water, how can I encourage them to swim?

It is very common for children to be apprehensive or even scared of swimming. The unknown can be very frightening for them, but our teachers can get them to believe in themselves very quickly. There are a lot of things you can do at home to encourage water confidence: making bath time fun; picking up toys from the bottom of the bath; and going swimming as a family as much as possible. Of course, showing how comfortable you as parents are in the water is a great start too.

How do you ensure my child’s safety on your poolside?

Majority of our teachers hold a suitable lifesaving qualification when a designated lifesaver (e.g. lifeguard) is not present. If a swimming teacher does not hold a lifesaving qualification, a qualified lifesaver will be present on poolside at all times.

When teaching in the water, there must always be at least one person on the poolside who is competent to respond during emergencies and we can assure you that as a community leisure centre, safety compliance is of the utmost importance to us.

Changing rooms during swimming lessons seem very busy at times, is there any other place my child can change in time for their lesson?

To tackle this issue, we have made both female and male changing rooms gender-neutral during swimming lesson period between 16:00 – 18:15, Monday to Friday only.

However, adherence to gender-specific changing rooms needs to be followed outside of these times.
